The Podlasie Table

The cuisine of the borderland of Mazovia, Podlasie, Kurpie and the Suwałki region — hearty, potato-based, with Lithuanian and Tatar influences. In Łomża and the area you can eat it in both milk bars and regional inns.

The signature dishes are kartacze (cepeliny) — large potato dumplings with meat, served with crackling and sour cream — and potato babka and kiszka, baked in the oven to a crisp crust. Among the sweets, sękacz reigns — baked layer by layer over an open fire, once obligatory at weddings.

Around Łomża there are farms and producers making regional products — Kurpie honey, cheeses, cured meats, cordials. Łomża also has its own brewery, on labels across Poland.

We send guests an up-to-date list of places — from the milk bar by the Old Market Square to the inns on the Narew and bakeries with real sourdough bread.

Good to know

  • Kartacze and babka are best ordered where they are made “on site” — ask about the dish of the day.
  • Sękacz is sold to take away at cake shops and regional fairs.
