The escarpment above the Narew, on which old Łomża spread out, gives a wide view of the river valley — meanders, oxbow lakes and meadows stretching to the horizon. The best viewpoints are in the People's Park and on Rybaki street, and on the far bank rise the forts in Piątnica — the remains of a Tsarist fortress with a view over the whole town.
Driving the Via Baltica north, you reach Suwałki and the Augustów Forest in an hour, and the Lithuanian border crossing in under two. In the other direction, Warsaw is about 150 km away. Łomża lets you break that route calmly: an evening walk by the river, a night in a quiet apartment, on the road again in the morning.
In the town itself it is worth visiting the North Mazovian Museum, the Old Market Square and the cathedral, and in summer — the town beach on the Narew.
Good to know
- From the apartment in the centre you can walk to the river and the viewpoints in about fifteen minutes.
- For the forts in Piątnica it is best to go by car or bike — they are just across the bridge over the Narew.
