The cathedral was built between 1504 and 1526 from red brick, in the Mazovian Gothic style. Inside, the crystal vault of the nave has survived, along with Renaissance tombstones and a richly decorated chapel. Beside it stands a free-standing bell tower, and by the church there is a monument to Duke Janusz I of Mazovia, under whose rule Łomża received its town charter.
The Old Market Square is now a restored space with a fountain, benches and restaurants in historic townhouses. From here, side streets lead to the People's Park on the Narew, to the North Mazovian Museum and to the escarpment overlooking the river valley.
The Prince Stanisław Apartment sits in exactly this part of town — you step straight out for a walk around the Old Market Square and up to the cathedral, without getting in the car.
